Should I start on Acoustic or Electric?
The answer to this used to be quite easy. Acoustic guitars for students were cheap and hard to play while electric guitars expensive and easy to play.
Now there are electric guitars that are less expensive while still being easy to play & acoustic guitars in the student model range are more playable and better sounding.
With every electric guitar one needs an amp, which can double the cost but many aspiring guitarists dream of holding an electric guitar. There are package deals out there that include an amp but quite honestly, while the guitars are quite playable the amps are horrid and the other stuff they put in the packages (tuner, cable, strap, picks etc.) are junk and you would be better off buying them separately (as you will need to anyways).
Acoustic guitars make better investments and are a better price point value.
Our advice, if they want an electric and you are willing to foot the real cost then get one, but if undecided get an acoustic. We recommend getting a nylon string (AKA classical) acoustic guitar as they are easier to play, sound nice, a good value and come in 3 sizes for folks from small to adult.
